Dog poisoned, left brain damaged and put down, claim owners

A Waterside man, whose partner’s family pet was left with brain damage and had to be put down after it was poisoned in Inishowen last month, is urging people across the North West to be vigilant.

The couple - who did not wish to be named - told the Sentinel they believed Jet, a Black Labrador, was poisoned near Culdaff sometime over Thursday and Friday, October 16 and 17.

They said that when Jet was discovered at the family home the dog’s legs were paralysed although he was aware of everything going on around him.

A vet told the owners that the dog must have consumed a large amount of poison given the damage.

According to the heartbroken owner: “I do feel that it is important that people realise what has happened. Whether it was caused deliberately by someone who has been watching the house, or it was accidental by poison being left out somewhere, I feel people need to know to be more careful in both respects.

“My dog was left with irreparable brain damage, which left him unable to move his limbs but he was aware of everything around him which was heartbreaking.

“He was a big strong dog and the vet said that he must have ingested quite an amount to do such damage.”

She stated: “I reported it to the Garda just in case something did happen to the house as it is not occupied every night. To be honest, it has left me very unsettled to even stay in the house now without the dog there.”

The Sentinel asked the Garda Síochána if it was aware of the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We have no record of that alleged incident on our system.”
