Damhead run daily miles for cancer

Inspired by the '˜Daily Mile' scheme in Scotland, where children run a mile every day during school, P4 teacher Miss McWilliams decided to introduce the run to her class at Damhead Primary in October 2015.

The children run four laps round the school grounds weather permitting, the equivalent of one mile. P4 thoroughly enjoy the run and the most obvious benefits are fitness and energy levels have improved as well as greater concentration in class.

Using Damhead Primary School as a starting point the children have been using their equivalent miles to reach destinations along the Northern Ireland coastline. Each new town or village reached earns them a stamp in their “passport”. Those children with 100% attendance have now completed 79 miles and have reached Ballygalley Head Larne.

In February the children decided to use their daily mile to help others. The children chose the Cancer Fund for Children by dedicating their February and March miles (28 miles each) to the charity. Rebecca Oates from the charity was invited to a special assembly on Tuesday, May 31 where the P4s were able to present her with a cheque for £825. Miss McWilliams would like to thank everyone who sponsored the children and encouraged them to keep up their running. Huge congratulations to the children on their wonderful achievement!
