Damage to new Centre is just a ‘one-off’

According to police, a report was received that damage had been caused to the centre on the night of Monday, April 29 or Tuesday, April 30.

During the incident, fences were pulled down, foundations damaged and outbuildings badly vandalised.

Police are asking that members of the public report any suspicious activity in the area to them immediately on 0845 600 8000 and if it is an emergency, please dial 999.

Despite the early hiccup, the vice-chair of Dervock Community Association, Mr. Steven Phillips, is confident that there was nothing sinister about the incident and that there is little likelihood of it being repeated.

“There is a terrific buzz about the village both in the Association and the community.

“We had a meeting last Tuesday night and the positivity was excellent

“We have a proper structure in place to meet the needs of the community.

“ I can tell you there is a great deal of support and excitement about the development of proper facilities for both young and old here.

“We had been in something of a rut, but that’s now gone and it’s thanks to the likes of Davy McCloskey from Supporting Communities N.I. who has spent time with us offering advice and assistance,” Mr. Phillips told the Times.

He went on; “We have a spend of more than £1 million.

“And we have to step up to the mark and prove that the money is being spent in the right areas which we are confident is the case.”

Mr. Phillips warned that any damage to the centre could result in prosecutions.

“We don’t want to see people in trouble with the law.

“We want young people to work together and show that Dervock has a community spirit and a heart that will create a better society,” he added.

* Plans for a new defibrilator for the village are progressing. The chair of the Association, Mr. Frankie Cunningham, has submitted an application and the British Heart Foundation are on board to assist with the Association.
