Ms. Margaret Somers and Mr. Liam Berry applied for the grant in June 2015 and received confirmation that they would receive it the following September.

They applied for the grant which went towards the buying of a laser cutter so that they could give pupils the opportunity to experience the use of CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacture) in the classroom. The laser cutter arrived just in time for Cross and Passion’s Open Night last January and some of the pupils who attend the lunchtime STEM club each Wednesday were on hand to show prospective Year 8 pupils what it could do.

Over the next few months, three current Year 10 pupils mentored by Miss McGookin from the Science Department and Mr. Berry hope to have their entry to the 2017 BT Young Scientist Competition accepted and intend to use the laser cutter to help them on their way to making it to the finals in Dublin in January 2017.

Ms. Somers, Mr. Berry and the Board of Governors of Cross and Passion College would like to acknowledge the generous grant awarded by the ‘Awards for All Lottery Fund’. The opportunity to purchase a piece of state of the art equipment for our school will not only benefit those pupils who attend our STEM Club, but will hopefully encourage our pupils to follow STEM careers in the future.
