Poundworld set to rescue Peacocks stores with 60 new jobs

POUNDWORLD is to bring 60 jobs to Cookstown and Magherafelt after finalising a takeover of two former Peacock’s stores in Magherafelt and Cookstown.

The UK company confirmed the news this week to the Mid-Ulster Mail and said each store would bring approximately 30 jobs to each town.

The details come just four months after the retail giant pulled the stores, on Cookstown’s Orritor Street and Market Street in Magherafelt with the loss of 17 staff.

A spokesperson for Poundworld told the MAIL the Orritor Street store would officially open on Saturday May 19th, with a date still to be set for the opening of the South Derry shop.

Mid-Ulster DUP Ian McCrea welcomed the news.

He said: “This is great news for both Cookstown and Magherafelt.”

“I know when Peacocks closed there was a lot worry about the loss of jobs it brought, so to hear that this boost has come is fantastic.”

“Both Magherafelt and Cookstown are retail towns and this will send the message out to businesses that we are areas that are worth investing in.”
