A Ballymoney man has branded the admission price for the swimming pool at the town’s leisure centre as “ridiculous”.
However Ballymoney Council, which runs the facility, says that membership packages are available from less than £1 per day.
The local man who did not want to be named said that the prices are so high compared to other Council-run pools that he will not use the facility any longer.
The man said: “I went to the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre to use the swimming pool to be told it would cost £4.70 or if I took out annual membership of £15, it would cost £3.90.
“That compares with £3.05 in Ballymena and in Coleraine Leisure Centre a swim costs you £2.40 until 4.30pm and £3.50 after that - and that’s without paying a yearly membership. I just won’t use the pool in the Joey Dunlop Centre any more. It’s far too expensive especially for such a small area. Ballymoney isn’t very well off so it’s not right that people have to pay more,” he added.
A Council spokessperson said: “The council sets the prices for all its services based on the quality of the service provided. I suggest that the gentleman speaks to the Head of Leisure Services who will explain all the services available within the gym membership package which costs less than £1 per day.”
