Carrickfergus gets second Rotary Interact Club

New clubs have been established to engage young people in extending the scope of Rotary International in Carrickfergus.

The latest Interact initiative is a joint venture between Carrickfergus Rotary and Downshire School.

Sam Crowe, Carrickfergus Rotary president and Jim Dunlop, Youth Activities chairman visited the school to talk to fifth year, lower sixth and upper sixth year students about the organisation and in particular.

Also returning to the school as part of the Rotary delegation was former principal, Mary Sinnamon, PR and communications, who stated: “There was a very positive response from the students and a wide degree of interest expressed in becoming involved with Interact.

“The Rotarians of Carrickfergus are looking forward with anticipation to progressing the formation of a new Interact Club. This will be their second Interact Club in the town.”

The Interact members are students from years 12, 13 and 14 and will focus on charity efforts “for great causes both at home here in Northern Ireland and internationally”.

Meanwhile, Ulidia Integrated College has announced Thomas Adams as the new president of the school’s Interact Club.

In a statement, Ulidia explained: “Interact gives students ages 12-18 the chance to make a real difference while having fun. The Interact Club carries out two service projects a year: one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. The club is sponsored by Carrickfergus Rotary and we look forward to a great year of both local and international projects.”

Thomas was one of the original members of the club and is “very excited” to hold the office of president this year. He is supported by vice-president Katie McNally, secretary Alana Buckley and treasurer Rachel Morrow.
