Cllr Cara McShane said: “This appears to be an indiscriminate attack on three caravans just inside the entrance of the site, where two caravans were daubed with graffiti and one caravan set alight.

“Thankfully the emergency services were on the scene very quickly, with the fire brigade able to extinguish the flames just after 6am - not long after the attack took place. While this certainly seems to be an isolated incident, it could quite easily have had catastrophic consequences.

“With each caravan having their own gas cylinders, an explosion could have caused serious damage to property and severe injuries to people in the neighbouring residential area on Clare Road.

“This area has attracted generations of the same families and over the past year huge investment has been made by the owners to enhance the site. We are looking forward to welcoming holiday home owners back to Ballycastle after what has been an extremely tough year.

“I would like to thank the quick response from the emergency services and in the meantime would appeal to anyone who has any information to contact the police.”
