Bann Marina re-development

Ballymena Borough Council has taken over the redevelopment of Portglenone Marina from the contractors.

It is anticipated the facility – which includes wet and dry changing rooms, motor home facilities, play parks, a social & events area and a base for the Community Rescue Service – will be officially opened in mid to late Spring.

A council spokesperson explained: “There are some areas that have to be grassed out in the Spring as these could not have been seeded before then. The Children’s Play Area has for the most part grass or reinforced grass as its finished surface. Whilst the grass has germinated in the Junior Play area it needs time to establish fully before it will be able to withstand wear.”

Both the Children’s Play Area and the Toddler Play Area have been fenced off until further notice. Alternative access to the Gortgole Road will be available to the public via the new path between the Bowling Green and the Play Area.

It is anticipated the project will bring additional benefits to the local economy in terms of tourism and community led activities such as festivals and events. The £1.5milllion cost has been funded by Ballymena Borough Council, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Rural Development Programme.
