Balnamore War Memorial attacked

The alleged attack happened sometime last night (Monday, August 19).

Chris Gray, Chairman of the Balnamore Community Association hit out at the destruction stating: “Sometime last night the War Memorial was attacked. The vandals cut down the flag and kick off the wreaths laying there. They even took the wreath presented by the Drumheagles Young Defenders.

“I believe the culprits were no one from the local area. This War Memorial was rebuilt by both sides of the local community eight years ago.

“It cost around £9,000/£10,000 and we didn’t get any grants to help us, the community simply raised the money by door-to-door and local businesses giving donations.

“This War Memorial, in my view, is one of the best kept in the province. We sweep it everyday and water the flowers there. The destruction has hit the local community hard and we are appealing for information. Anyone who witnessed the attack or have heard anything, please contact the police.”
