Ballymoney St John celebrates 75 years

Volunteers from St John Ambulance, past and present, joined Mayor Bill Kennedy, on Thursday evening, at a Civic Reception in the Town Hall to mark the division’s 75th anniversary.

Addressing the assembled guests Mayor Kennedy said: “Your organisation has a long and impressive history and the Ballymoney division has a distinguished record of service in public and community life in this borough.

“I welcome the opportunity to pay tribute to your work and congratulate you all on your voluntary and community service over the years, to this borough in particular.

“St. John Ballymoney Division has also interested itself in and contributed generously to worthy causes. These efforts afford your members the opportunity to work together to assist those less fortunate members of society.

“I commend the members of the Ballymoney Division on their service in this community and hope that they will carry on their good works for many years to come,” the Mayor concluded.

In his remarks, the Mayor also acknowledged the many well known Ballymoney folk who have given selfless service to St John Ambulance, including former Mayor and Honorary Freeman, Mrs Mollie Holmes.

He also made mention of many local doctors including Dr Nevin, Dr Miller, Dr Ross Thompson, Dr Hanna, Dr Belford, Dr Burns, Dr McCartney, Dr Johnston and Dr Flynn and most recently Dr David Johnston.

He also referred to the many miles covered and hours of duty clocked up by St John volunteers over the year and the support they lend to the many events which Ballymoney Borough Council and other groups in the borough organise.
