Ballymoney girl Karen’s piping is a breath of fresh air

TEENAGE piper Karen McAleese from Ballymoney has been wowing guests at Hillsborough Castle where she was invited to perform at the annual ceremony to mark the presentation of Lord Lieutenants’ Awards, the highest accolade which can be conferred on members of the Reserve Forces and Cadet movement.

The talented Cadet (pictured right) has been playing bagpipes for just two years but already she’s causing a musical sensation and guests at the formal gathering were astonished to discover that the huge sound which greeted them at the Castle was produced by the diminutive fifteen-year-old!

Currently Karen is the only piper in the whole of her Battalion, but the Ballymoney High School student is hoping that the sound of the pipes may just inspire others to follow her lead and take up the instrument, benefiting from the free musical tuition available within the Cadet movement.
