All-Ireland Prayer Vigil

With gatherings in all 12 dioceses of the Church of Ireland – including St Columb’s Cathedral, Mothers’ Union hopes this simple act of solidarity will help raise awareness among the general population and encourage governments to take action to end gender-based violence.

The local vigil will take place in St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry, from 3pm to 4.30pm. It will be addressed by Mrs Mary Good, who will speak on behalf of International Justice Mission – a global organisation which protects the poor from violence in the developing world, and Ms Marie Brown from Women’s Aid, who will offer a local perspective on the issue.

The ’16 Days’ campaign is based on the period between November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and December 10, which is Human Rights Day.

Figures from the World Health Organisation show that globally an estimated 23 to 37 per cent of women suffer violence from an intimate partner, and that 38% of all women murdered across the world are killed by their partner. ‘16 Days’ provides an opportunity to raise awareness of this issue, demonstrate solidarity against violence and put pressure on governments to take action.
