20th Oyster festivalcelebrates with family fun day

IF you thought the Hillsborough International Oyster Festival was just for grown-ups, then think again.

This year, the Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary and to mark the occasion some brand new events have been added to the programme to ensure a fantastic day for all.

The family fun day will be taking place on Sunday August 19 and features a whole afternoon’s events to keep both the young ones, and the older ones, happy.

In the surroundings of Hillsborough Castle, a whole trove of activities has been planned to get the kids active and having fun, such as the Inflatable Obstacle Course and treasure hunts.

For those with nerves of steel, the infamous Climbing Tower will be on hand to test if you can make it all the way to the top.

Guided tours of Hillsborough Castle are being arranged for groups of kids and adults. There’ll be a miniature farm for the animal lovers amongst us and pony rides around the fabulous grounds will feature during the afternoon. If you have a favourite animal, or favourite anything for that matter, our face-painters will be on-hand to transform the kids into lions, tigers and Spidermans. But if jungle animals and super-heroes aren’t your thing, perhaps you might just want something snazzy in time for the Kiddies’ Disco later.

For the adults, a top class Silver Band will play during the afternoon, featuring female vocalist Elizabeth Morrow, who will sing the finale. Then will follow band displays and a traditional Sunset Ceremony, courtesy of the Royal Engineers TA Band.

Tickets cost £8.00 for adults and £4.00 for children; or £20.00 for a family of four and tickets for the BBQ will be on sale at the entrance to the event. Please note that the entry price does not include food.

As usual, all proceeds will be going towards the Hillsborough International Oyster Festival’s nominated charity, which this year is the Jill Todd Trust. The Trust was set up as a cancer charity in honour of Hillsborough resident Jill Todd who sadly passed away in 2010.

The Family Fun Day will run from 1pm – 6pm.
