1 in 3 poor in city

ONE in three people in Londonderry are poor whilst the poverty rate for children is even higher at 40 per cent - the highest rates in Northern Ireland, according to the latest statistics available.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland revealed the percentage of people in relative low income poverty in the city from 2007/8 to 2009/10 was 32 per cent. The percentage of poor children was 40 per cent.

The information was produced using the Family Resources Survey datasets for Northern Ireland, and the Households Below Average Income datasets for Northern Ireland.
