Sammy welcomes grandchildren into the brotherhood of Scouting

Twins Adam and Amy Ellis became the latest members of Scouting supremo Sammy Malcolm’s family to recite the Scout Promise.

There’s 76 years between Sammy and his twin grandchildren, who are the latest in a long line of family members to join the youth organisation.

The 80-year-old had the pleasure of leading the investiture ceremony for Adam and Amy (4) into 1st Lurgan Squirrels as well as their older brother Luke (8) who was formally welcomed into 1st Lurgan’s Cubs.

Not to be left out, their older sister Holly (11) is in Waringstown Guides.

Sammy said: “I was absolutely delighted to be able to perform that ceremony. Even with my stick.

“It’s something that wouldn’t happen very often - a grandfather being able to invest his grandchildren.”

“We’re a Scouting family altogether,” he added.

Sammy’s three children were all involved in the Scouts - Graeme and the late Gavin were both members of 1st Lurgan while Fiona helped out with the Cubs there.

Graeme has helped out with 15th Norwich where his son Calum, who will be 15 in January, was a member. His daughter Erin is a member of the Guides.

Sammy said: “I’ll have been with 1st Lurgan for 50 years next year. I was in 3rd Lurgan before that. We used to meet above Liptons shop and in the Model School. It was run by Hal Hutchinson and Davy Beckett.”

Sammy holds the position of Group Scout Leader and County Treasurer and is a former Assistant County Commissioner.

“I’ve enjoyed all my years in Scouting,” he said. “It’s great to see 
the young ones keeping the 
family tradition going.”
