The local children’s charity is seizing the annual trend for all things bakery-related, inspired by TV’s Great British Bake Off, in the hopes of “raising” money for a very good cause.

Cash For Kids’ ‘Big Bake Day’ sponsored by NordMende, is asking for groups of bakers join together to make and sell all manner of cakes, pastries and sweet treats in a countrywide competition. The competition invites teams in four categories (family & friends, schools, workplace and community groups) to get involved.

Groups in each category must bake and sell as much as possible to family, friends, colleagues or complete strangers and make their donation before September 16 to secure one of four places in a grand final, happening two days later in Belfast’s Victoria Square Shopping Centre. The grand final, which will be part of a live outside broadcast on Downtown Radio, will see teams of up to 10 from each category let loose on the city to sell as much as possible, with one team taking home the title of Big Bake Day Champions and £2,000 worth of Norde Mende electrical goods.

Cash for Kids Charity Manager, Andrea Charles said: “Baking Fever has swept the nation once again as the Great British Bake Off has returned to our screens and thousands of us are trying our hands at the delicious cakes and buns we see in every episode. We thought this was a great opportunity to see all that hard work, and all those delicious treats, go to help a very worthy cause!

“According to the latest NI Poverty Bulletin 132,000 children in Northern Ireland – that’s almost a third of all kids here – are living in absolute poverty* – the highest figure since since the bulletin began over 10 years ago. At Cash for Kids it’s our mission to support these children but we want to do that in a way which really gets people involved and encourages them to make a difference with a bit of healthy competition.”

For individual bakers with a creative and competitive streak, Cash for Kids is offering an additional incentive. Readers of the Ballymena and Antrim Times are invited to submit their own spin on a classic bakery recipe or one which is completely original to them along with their Big Bake Day donation. The most delicious, creative or inventive recipes will be judged by TV personality and local cookery icon, Jenny Bristow and five will be chosen for an exclusive bakery masterclass with Jenny in her NordMende kitchen and her home in Cullybackey. Jenny and the Cash For Kids team will choose 50 recipes in total from all submissions received to be included in a new Big Bake Day recipe e-book which will be available to purchase in the coming months. All proceeds raised from the sale of the book will go to Cash For Kids.
