Auld Lammas Fair - book launch in Ballycastle Library

THE Auld Lammas Fair Photographs, the long awaited new book from Portrush photographer Alastair McCook, will be launched in Ballycastle Library on Thursday 1st November, from 6.00pm - 7.30pm.

Auld Lammas Fair Photographs is the latest book from Alastair McCook and contains over 120 pages of black and white photographs covering over twenty five years in the history of the Auld Lammas Fair, held annually in August in Ballycastle.

The images all come from Alastair’s extensive archive of Auld Lammas Fair photographs, and the majority of the photographs have not previously been published before.

The collection of iconic images capture the essence of The Auld Lammas Fair and include the traditional stalls selling yellowman and dulse, street entertainers and musicians, the street preachers and the horse dealers trading on the traditional pitch on the Fairhill.

Alastair was born and raised in Monaclough, North Antrim, in the shadow of Knocklayde mountain and has been interested in photography for as long as he can remember. Most of his years as a photographer have been devoted to photographing motorcycle racing and after taking photos for nearly 30 years, he has built up a huge back catalogue of material.

Over the last 25 years, Alastair has attended the Auld Lammas Fair in his capacity as a photographer and this book is a memorable record of one of Ireland’s great events, of days of laughter and fun, and of times gone but not forgotten.

He explains: “Many of the photos taken when I started were of local characters and were simply taken for my own enjoyment. Over the years, they have built into a unique record and I think this book really does the Auld Lammas Fair justice, as it captures what the event is really like and what it is all about.”
