WATCH: The Beatles singing Red Sails In The Sunset

Red Sails In The Sunset was published as far back as 1935, its music written by Hugh Williams (pseudonym for Wilhelm Grosz) with lyrics by the prolific songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.

The song was inspired by the “red sails” of Kitty of Coleraine, a yacht Kennedy often saw off the north coast. He wrote the song while staying in Portstewart.

The title of the song provided the inspiration for annual Red Sails Festival which begins its 2016 programme on Sunday.

Each year more than 65,000 people arrive in Portstewart for the annual Festival.

This year will see over 60 acts, events and activities for adults and children of all ages.

Some of the earliest versions were recorded by Al Bowlly with Ray Noble and his Orchestra on September 18, 1935 and Guy Lombardo, on October 11, 1935. Bing Crosby also did a version.

It was also covered by Nat King Cole in 1951, reaching the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart, peaking at No48.

Other versions have been recorded by Vera Lynn, Tony Martin, Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Dinah Washington.
