The Pinkertons of Ballaghmore talk

John Pinkerton, retired solicitor from Ballymoney and member of the U3A, gave an interesting historical talk at the Ballymoney U3A April Meeting at the Old Court House in Charlotte Street.

He named the talk ‘The Pinkertons of Ballaghmore’ and concentrated on two of his uncles: George Hartley Pinkerton, 1891 to 1968, and John Dick Pinkerton, 1895 to 1962. He explained: “I chose these two relatives as we are now in the centenary year of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July, 1916. There has been considerable interest in the First World War since the centenary of its commencement in 1914. Both men, brothers, fought in the First World War. Then, since they were still in their forties during the Second World War, they both served again. As such they were extremely lucky to survive and live on into the 1960s. The men’s mother left behind a collection of letters from the oldest son to her during the early years of World War I which provided me with material for this talk.”

The speaker for the next meeting, the AGM on 3rd May, will be U3A member, Rev. Frances Bach, who will be speaking about ‘Human Trafficking in Northern Ireland.’ On 7th June, Robin Cole will be speaking about ‘The Broughgammon Story’. New members are always welcome.
