Store colleagues and customers in Northern Ireland have contributed £324,000 to that total, of which more than £20,400 was raised by the Tesco Ballymoney store alone.

In the first 16 months of fundraising for the Partnership the Tesco Ballymoney store has regularly ranked in the top 10 (of 500) performing stores nationwide. Tesco colleagues and customers from this store have played an instrumental role in this fundraising success story. Fundraising activities have included their support during flagship fundraisers for the Partnership, such as On Your March, Beach Bonanza, Rock the Shop, 30 minute challenge, Every Little Elf and Superheroes weekend. These took place at Tesco stores nationwide and were the highest grossing colleague-led fundraisers at the Tesco Ballymoney Castle store.

Around 4,000 Diabetes UK and BHF volunteers across the UK helped to lead on two successful bucket collections at Tesco stores in February and June last year, raising £378,000 for the Partnership. Tesco colleagues at the Ballymoney store have held several additional fundraising events including a quadrathon, in which two Tesco customers took part in the challenge of four marathons in four days, in August 2015. Together they raised £2,200 for the Partnership.

Fionnuala Savage, Fundraising Manager for the National Charity Partnership in Northern Ireland, explained: “The commitment shown by Tesco colleagues in Ballymoney to involve their customers and fundraise for this cause is truly inspiring. Type 2 diabetes can increase a person’s risk of heart and circulatory disease and the number of people in Northern Ireland currently at increased risk of developing both is in the hundreds of thousands. We’re working together with Tesco customers to help make a difference and help millions of people to lower their risk of both.

“I would like to thank all Tesco customers who have supported colleagues in their fundraising efforts for the National Charity Partnership to date. They have raised an incredible amount of money so far. I would encourage Tesco customers to continue to show their support at in-store events, as we now move on to years two and three of this amazing Partnership.”

In 2016, amongst other things, colleagues at the Tesco Ballymoney store, in association with Ballymoney Council, Castle Community Group and Ballymoney Football Club, intend to host a community charity marquee to raise funds for the National Charity Partnership. This will take place between 27 and 29 May at the store car park.

* Launched in January 2015, the three year Partnership between Tesco, Diabetes UK and the BHF aims to raise £30 million. Half the money raised will fund the vital and ongoing work of both charities. The remainder will fund joint projects by all three partners, like the Let’s Do This campaign, to help reduce millions of people’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.

Throughout 2016 and 2017, the Let’s Do This campaign will reach millions of people nationwide to inspire them to set achievable lifestyle goals, to boost their health and wellbeing. In Northern Ireland free, fun events and programmes will be brought to Londonderry/Derry and Strabane. In Belfast the Partnership will support the delivery of free food-based holiday lunch clubs and Beat the Street – a free real-life walking and cycling game set to inspire up to 60,000 individuals to get active.
