The British Empire Medal (BEM) which was awarded to one of Ballymoney’s best known and most respected residents, the late Shuan Esler, is currently on display at Ballymoney Museum.
Shaun sadly passed away on 5th June 2013 and Mrs. Joan Christie, the Lord Lieutenant of Co. Antrim, presented the posthumous award to Shaun’s wife, Jacqueline, last November.
Shaun was recognised by the Queen for his invaluable contributions to local charities. On his retirement, after 35 years with local bakeries, Shaun worked tirelessly in the office of Chairman for the Causeway Cardiac Group, NI Cardiac Patients’ Forum and the Armour Day Centre. In his role with these institutions, he was committed to fundraising and lobbying politicians and made a difference to many people’s lives. Shaun was also well known as Santa Claus and enjoyed several Christmas seasons handing out gifts to excited children in local stores.
The Museum is very grateful to the Esler family who have offered the BEM on loan for this brief display. Ring 028 2766 0230 for opening hours.
