In a statement to the Times, the TUV Alderman highlighted that this was the band’s 40th anniversary.

She explained: “I was saddened to learn that Giant’s Causeway Protestant Flute Band will fold after it takes part in this year’s 12th of July parade. This is especially sad given that this year is the band’s 40th anniversary.

“Bands are a vital part of the Unionist community. Not only do they enable young people to develop musical skills but they result in friendships which often last a lifetime.

“If the GAA can receive millions in funding, then I think its high time the band fraternity were treated on an equal footing to ensure the tangible benefits on the ground continue and our communities are provided with an adequate platform to promote the band movement.”
