As part of the national celebrations, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council lit a beacon to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday at Harbour Hill, Portstewart on Thursday 21st April. Throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories beacons were lit to celebrate this landmark birthday.

Local running and cycling clubs participated in a relay from each of the four legacy areas converging at Portstewart for the final leg, totalling 90 miles. The Sea Cadets provided a guard of honour for the arrival of the runners and the lighting of the beacon. Causeway Archers display team marked the event by lighting the beacon with 9 flaming arrows – one for each decade – before shooting a further 9 one by one and 9 in unison to end the event.

Prior to the event, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said, “There is a long standing tradition of celebrating royal occasions with lighting of beacons and it is marvellous to be able to celebrate The Queens 90th birthday in this unique way. It is an opportunity for local communities throughout the Borough to celebrate this important milestone in The Queens’ life.”
