St. Mary’s GAC Rasharkin held the Registration night for its Rasharkin Gets Active event in St. Olcan’s Parish Hall in the village on Saturday 16th January. This year’s event which is being run in association with Kennedys Pharmacy follows on from previous years where the club has held highly popular Biggest Loser events.

Rasharkin Gets Active is a fresh take on this and this year the focus will be on getting the community out and about and active rather than just weight loss.

The 8-week program will offer a wide range of weekly events to cater for all ages and abilities, these will include walking, Couch to 5K, Running and Exercise classes as well as organised team activities on alternate Sundays.

All the participants will keep a log of weekly weight loss and weekly activity which will allow them to track their progress over the two months as well as contributing to the team competition.

There will also be a focus on Health and Well-being with a particular aim to help people quit smoking.

Kennedys Pharmacy will be hosting a talk on this subject during the event as well as providing valuable assistance to anyone who wishes to give up smoking.

St. Mary’s GAC through its Health and Wellbeing committee will also be organising a series of speakers to provide informative talks to the participants on various topics relating to Health and Wellbeing over the course of the 8 weeks.

Organiser Thomas Donaghy and Terry Hasson from St. Mary’s GAC gave those registering on the night an overview of what the next 8 weeks would involve and what can be expected and each participant received a timetable of all the events on offer.

Patrick Kennedy from Kennedys Pharmacy commended the club for running an event of this nature and urged all involved to get the most out of the program and most importantly to enjoy themselves.

A large number of participants registered on the night and St. Mary’s GAC looks forward to helping the whole community get active over the next eight weeks.
