Winter League race hots up at Ballycastle Golf Club

With the PJ McIlroy & Sons Winter League now having run for five weeks the battle for 1st place in the teams competitions is hotting up. Team Valencia took the top 13 points at the weekend but it is Team Shangarry, captained by Declan McCarry, who are still out in front with 47 points.

Chasing hard is team Bonamargy captained by Allan McCook who lie second on 45 points with Team Margy captained by Dennis Devine in 3rd position on 42 points.

Team Valencia and Team Winchester on 38 points are still very much in contention while Team Knocklayde on 37, Team Rathlin on 36 and Team Culfeightrin on 35 points are all still in with a shout with four weeks still to go.

At the bottom Team Atlantic captained by Mark McPoland are in deep water with 16 points and will have to improve rapidly if they are to avoid the dreaded wooden spoons.

In the best overall individual competition Declan McCarry on 141 points has now moved 3 points clear of Kevin Traynor on 138, with Des Nevin in 3rd spot on 134 points. Of course all of these positions could change as the final weeks kick-in as the individual competition is based on the best 7 out of 9 cards.

On Saturday in Section One, Ivor Torrens (13) came top with 32 points over the 13 holes with Des Nevin (8) taking second on count back on 30 points from Denis Allen (12) also on 30 points, pushing Liam Gallagher out of the prizes.

In Section Two, Brian Walsh (18) had 21 points on the back nine on his way to amassing 30 points which pushed John McSparron (16) into 2nd place also with 30 points, ahead of Michael Campbell (15) in 3rd place with 29 points.

The weather on Sunday morning resulted in a much reduced number of competitors and Sunday’s winner was Chris McCloskey (17) with 29 points. In 2nd place was Liam McGonigle (14) with 28 points and Gerard McCloskey (17) in 3rd place also with 28 points.

Members are reminded that the Winter League Dinner takes place on Saturday 22nd March, names should be entered on the sheet provided in the clubhouse as soon as possible.
