Portrush Seconds win, but only just

MOSSLEY SIXTHS 0 PORTRUSH SECONDS 1

PORTRUSH Seconds made heavy weather of their narrow away win against Mossley Sixths on Saturday, but the victory keeps alive their hopes of a top two finish in the league and promotion to Junior Four.

Playing on a water-based pitch which Portrush aren’t accustomed to made conditions more difficult for the visitors, but their overall first half performance eclipsed that of their opponents.

The best chances fell to Portrush but the forwards failed to convert resulting in a frustrating spell.

However, two minutes before the break Peter Kerr scored his first goal for Portrush with a simple tap-in after good work from his colleagues.

The second half saw Mossley step up their game and they began strongly causing the Portrush defence quite a few problems.

Defender Peter McMullan was in brilliant form and stymied attack after attack as Portrush hung on to their narrow lead.

Captain Tom Cartmill also played well in defence and was responsible for a number of important tackles.

Overall, Portrush will be pleased with the result and came off the pitch relieved that they had got the three points.

It may not have been their best performance of the season, but the pitch did play a part in that.

This Saturday, Portrush play Kilkeel Thirds at home and this is a must win game if the local boys are to keep up the promotion challenge.

PORTRUSH: T. Kirkpatrick, J. McMullan, P. McMullan, T. Cartmill, J. Hutchinson, D. Shirley, C. Henry, P. Linton, G. Christie, C. Leeming, A. Dalzell. Subs – B. McMullan, A. Christie, C. McKeeman, P. Kerr, C. Manson.
