McCook revels in spring conditions at P. J. McIlroy league in Ballycastle
WEEK Six of the P J McIlroy & Sons Winter League saw the first weekend of spring-like conditions and with the course drying out well the high scoring was not unexpected.
Saturday’s competitors registered some excellent results over the thirteen holes with Allan McCook (13) topping Section 1 with an outstanding 35 points, five ahead of his nearest challenger George McVeigh (13) on 30 points with David Higgins (14) in third place also on 30 points.
Victor Young (21) took first place in Section 2 with 31 points with 26 of those coming on the back nine. In second place Robin McHugh (15) scored 30 while Kevin Traynor took 3rd spot on 29.
In Section 1 on Sunday, Paul O’Brien was best with 30 points, with James McNeill (13) on 29 points and Damian McSorley (8) on 28 points taking the second and third places respectively. Garth Beckett (16) was the runaway winner of Section 2 with a splendid 33 points well ahead of Chris Hendrie (18) and Shaun McCook (18) both 27 points in the minor positions.
In the Teams competition Team Bonamargy took the 13 points for best team of the weekend and they now lead the League on 58 points, six ahead of Team Shangarry with Team Winchester third on 49 points,
Team Margy fourth on 47 and Team Valencia fifth on 46. With three weeks still to go any of these five could still grab the title. At the bottom Team Atlantic scored a single point for the 5th week out of the six played and now look destined to pick up the wooden spoons at the Dinner on Saturday 22nd March.
The individual competition remains a tight race with Kevin Traynor and Declan McCarry locked on 164 points with Allan McCook third on 161. Liam Gallagher and Paul McCloskey are just behind on 158 with Des Nevin well in contention on 157. As the individual competition is based on the best 7 out of 9 cards and players will drop their two worst scores there could be lots of twists and turns before the winner emerges.
