For the second Saturday in a row Mel Carleton topped the scoring at Ballycastle to win the Section One turkey competition after a round with only one bogey at the 2nd hole gave him a total of 45 points. Mind you he was pushed all the way by Eddie McMullan (13) who had three 2’s and a no score at the 13th on his way to taking 2nd place on 44 points. Paul O’Brien (14) took 3rd place on 43 points but he did collect the biggest prize of the day when he had a hole-in-one at the 10th.
In Section Two for 15-28 handicaps, it was the recently retired Colin Millar (16) who put all his new found practice time to good use with 44 points collecting 1st prize. Kevin Morton (28) was runner up on 43 points while the veteran Cecil Redmond (28) pipped two others with his 42 points to take 3rd place.
After the deluge of Saturday afternoon and night, Edgar Dornan (10) had an excellent front nine of 23 points on his way to a 43 total, which left him two points clear of Shane Staunton (11) who nudged Gerard Dowds out of 2nd place in Section One. Shaun McCook (19) lifted the Sunday Section Two turkey with an excellent 46 points, the best score of the weekend, while Mark Herald (18) like Shaun scored 24 points on the back nine to take 2nd place on 45 points.
* Brown Trout Golf Club - The first week of the “Star Fuels” (02870868611) sponsored winter league got underway last week with high scoring the order of the day! The ever steady Ronnie Milliken (6) was declared the winner after the enforcement of the tiebreak. Opening with a level par first nine for 21 points Ronnie completed the second nine in one over par adding 20. Highlight of his round was a birdie at the 6th.hole. and 15 pars! Taking runner-up prize Sam Reid (12) got off to a flying start with a one over par front nine giving him 23 points and with the help of a birdie at the 12th added 18 also scoring 41 points. Just one point back with 40 points third prize went to Malachy Laverty (15) with nines of 19 and 21 with the highlight a birdie at the 6th.hole. Twos were scored by Tommy McGowan and Tom Boyd.
Team captains lead by example. The league consists of six four man teams with best two cards counting six points to winning team down to one point for 6th. place. Team “Paraffin” led by Ronnie Milliken and backed up by Malachy Laverty took the six points. Team “Anthracite” were awarded five points again led by team captain Sam Reid and Mark Dempsey adding 37. Team captain of “Phurnacite” Jimmy Kelly also led by example with 39 points and Lyle Harris adding 34 taking four league points. Tommy McGowan’s team “Burnglow” earned three points with 71 points best score by W. Pyper with 37 points.
