Ladies Twos pick up good away victory

Ballymoney Ladies Second XI travelled to Lurgan Ladies Hockey Club on Saturday 11th Feb to play in a highly anticipated match.

After playing the team earlier in the season, and winning 7-1 the girls were keen to prove again who was the better team.

The girls were on a high and despite a long journey were prepared for battle.

The first half consisted of Money’s defence and midfield working as a strong unit. Ciara McGuigan and Cathryn Knipe worked tirelessly, firing balls to the top end of the pitch to meet young Heidi Johnston who, despite firm attempts, couldn’t slip past the fierce Lurgan defence.

Lurgan made a slip through the midfield of Money leaving Lesley Davis, Liz Mooreland and Ciara McGuigan to meet the forward Lurgan player. The defence line up worked excellently together with midfields Emma Heron and Olivia Linton to stop any further approach from Lurgan. This left the score 0-0 at half time.

A positive team talk from Diane Kirgan and inspiring messages from missing Captain Emma McElwee kept the girls eager to put themselves on the right side of the score line and came on to the pitch ready to go.

Diane Kirgan made some excellent balls up the left side of the pitch, working closely with Sara Gardner and Emma Heron who played one of their best games this season. Despite the game becoming heated with frustration from Lurgan, the Toon girls didn’t let anything take their eye off the prize allowing Olivia Linton to play a ball to Sara Gardner in the circle, meeting Emma Creelman at the left post to slip the ball through the keepers feet. The score with 10 minutes to go was 1-0 to Money and with everything to lose the girls didn’t want to let anything slip.

Lauren Henry ran some excellent balls on the left hand side of the pitch, unfortunately one was picked up by a Lurgan player who ran the length of the pitch and having a shot on goal. This did not phase mighty keeper Meghann Doey who made a fantastic save and kept the girls on the winning side of the score board.
