THE first of this year’s Monthly Medals was on offer at Ballycastle on Saturday and a field of over 120 competitors had to wrestle with quite windy conditions, particularly the later starters.
Eddie McMullan playing off a handicap of 13 was one of three players who recorded nett 68s to take the 1st place by virtue of his better back nine from Martin Brogan (11) in 2nd place.
In Section One for 0-12 handicappers, Patrick McIlroy (10) recorded a nett 69 while in Section Two (13-16) it was another good day for young Harry Kilgore playing off 16 who also recorded a nett 69.
Section 3 (17-28) saw Gerard McCloskey (17) follow on from his runner up spot in the Glandore Cup with the third nett 68 of the day. The 1st gross prize was won by Michael Dallat Jnr playing off 2 with a score of nett 75, while Owen Kennedy (6) picked up the 2nd gross on 77.
On Sunday the MS Society qualifier saw a much reduced field due to the adverse weather conditions and it was Liam McGonigle, out in the first group of the day, who recorded an excellent 36 points to win. Liam now goes forward to represent Ballycastle in the regional final at Edenmore Golf Club in October.
In the midweek stableford on Wednesday Francis Og McGinn (13) was the winner on 41 points, with Tony Connolly (11) 2nd on 39 points and Mark Herald (20) 3rd on 38 points.
Next Saturday the Mowbray Cup will be contested by the over 50’s and there will be a subsidiary competition for the more youthful members. Members are also reminded that if they wish to play in any of the club teams in the inter-club competitions they should put their names down on the sheets in the clubhouse.
