Niall McFerran from Rasharkin finished his junior racing career with victory in the Junior Rod Challenge Cup at Ballymena Raceway on New Year’s Day
Persistent rain throughout the afternoon made for difficult track conditions at the Gilmore Engineering sponsored event, but as always the racers coped admirably with the weather conditions to put on a good show for the hardy race fans who had braved the elements.
Main event of the afternoon was the 2015 Winter National Championship for the National Hot Rods, where Broughshane teenager Jaimie McCurdy continued his excellent run of results with a polished hat-trick of victories. European Champion John Christie from Crumlin followed the winner home in the feature race with 2014 winner Keith Martin in third.
Another driver to enjoy a perfect hat-trick of wins on New Year’s Day was Johny Gillespie, the Ballymena man storming through the day unbeaten to collect the Group Two Lightning Rod Winter Supreme Cup.
In the other classes a diverse field of Euro Stocks assembled to contest their Winter National Championship where victory went to Garvagh’s Lester McCloy in his raucous Toyota, while Steven McKane from Ballymena was back on form to lift the Stock Rod Challenge Cup.
The Junior Rods produced some fine racing once again, with Rasharkin’s Niall McFerran capturing the Challenge Cup on his final outing in the formula. The programme was completed by the F2 Stock Cars where Conor Hughes from Antrim took the final honours after splitting the heat wins with Ballyclare’s Sam McKay.
The new season of oval racing will commence at Ballymena Raceway on Good Friday (April 3) and full details of all the new season fixtures will be released shortly on the official Raceway website www.ballymenaraceway.com
