IN Division One on Saturday January 5 at Gracehill Golf Club, Randal McDonnell playing off 6 was triumphant with an astonishing 42pts over the 17 holes.
After a steady start the blue touch paper was lit after an eagle at the par 5 4th, pars then followed at the next 6 holes only to be interrupted by a birdie 2 at the par 3 11th, in précis Randal glided round in a glorious 2 under gross. Runner up was Chris McNeill playing off 7 with an excellent total of 40pts. Consistency was certainly his strength with 14 pars a couple of bogeys and a birdie which all added up to an excellent display of golfing acumen. Neilly Greer (11) was 3rd with 39pts.
In Division Two James McIlhatton playing off 24 came out on top with 36pts over the 17 holes. After making the turn 3 under his card ‘The Hat’ continued to make steady progress just doing enough to hold off Gordon Willis (20) whose 35pts was good enough for 2nd place.
After scoring level 2s for the front 9 Gordon picked up a shot on the final 8 holes, which meant Roy Hastings, playing off 28 had to settle for 3rd with 34pts. Ian Morrison was the recipient of the gross prize with 31pts.
In the Sunday Sweep on Sunday 6th January it was a double whammy over the weekend for Randal McDonnell (6) as he picked up his 2nd victory with 39pts.
After his epic display on Saturday he could have been forgiven for resting on his laurels but no he was out of the blocks and firing on all cylinders once again.
After making the turn just a couple over he quickly got these shots back with birdies at the 10th and 12th however a few dropped shots on the closing stages meant he had to settle for a 3 over 75 - the shame of it!
Herbie McCook (10) was 2nd with a very solid 38pts. With pars at three quarters of the holes Herbie was just a whisker away from denying Randal his double bubble weekend.
David ‘Belfast Dave’ McElveen (15) was 3rd with 37pts. Trevor Milliken showed how his years of knowledge and dedication to the game still pay dividends as he picked up the gross prize with a 78.
Finally congratulations to Mickey Connor who achieved the first Hole in One of 2013. After a sweetly struck iron at the par 3 11th it was cheers and high fives all around and then cheers of a different sort at the 19th hole a couple of hours later!
