Ju-Jitsu club at JDLC celebrates first black belt winner

INSTRUCTION in martial arts in the North Antrim area has grown in popularity in recent years with scores of youngsters as well as the more mature taking up the sport.

Thanks to the efforts of the likes of Danny Redmond and Alan Ashcroft, Ballymoney has made a name for itself in competitions up and down the country.

Another person to have played a prominent part in the promotion of martial arts is Peter Kernohan who has been operating out of the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre for the past four years as a Ju-Jitsu coach. Indeed, Peter celebrated his fourth birthday this month.

Last week, Sensie Peter, a 3rd Dan, celebrated the elevation of Gavin Moore to black belt status.

Gavin also entered a ju-jitsu groundwork competition in the Dojo in Ballymena and came second in his class. The club meet every Friday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and seniors from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
