Joey Dunlop would never have said it himself,
but he was known in the world over as king of the roads.

At the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards sponsored by Linwoods, Joey Dunlop was announced as Northern Ireland’s Greatest Sports Star Ever - as voted for by the readers.

The legendary motorcycle rider was top of
the poll, beating the
iconic George Best with the second largest number of votes and golfing
great Rory McIlroy, who came third in the poll
after 20 of NI’s sporting
heroes were short listed
by an expert panel of judges.

It’s clear that even 15 years after Joey’s untimely death, the legend lives on for this most down to earth and humble of sportsmen who was respected, revered and loved in equal measure.

Receiving the award for Northern Ireland’s Greatest Sports Star Ever from Richard McClean Managing Director of the Belfast Telegraph were Joey Dunlop’s daughters Donna McLean and Joanne Dunlop.
