Mayor: We need the Milk Cup finals back in Coleraine

The Mayor of Coleraine, councillor George Duddy says it is ‘vital’ that the Milk Cup finals return to Coleraine.

Speaking at last week’s August Council meeting, the DUP man commended the organisers on ‘yet another fantastic tournament’.

Councillor Duddy, who admitted that he was not a huge football fan, said that huge crowds had once again ‘descended on the Borough of Coleraine’ for the tournament.

However, he added: “Given what the tournament brings to this Borough the sooner we get the finals back in Coleraine the better.”

The Milk Cup finals have not been played at Coleraine Showgrounds since 2009.

The controversial decision to move the finals from their home at the Ballycastle Road was made in 2010 after health and safety issues were raised about the Showgrounds.

At the time, Milk Cup Chairman, Victor Leonard stressed that the move to Ballymena Showgrounds would be ‘temporary’.

The Milk Cup chairman said that ‘the showpiece finale to the event would return to Coleraine when there would be facilities available to host the three game Finals Night format.’
