Ballymoney’s Michael Dunlop got his season off to the perfect start with a victory in the GP1 at Donnington Park at the weekend.
The Milwaukee Yamaha rider bagged himself a slot on the grid in the Thundersport GP1 class. The class, which was packed to the rafters, had a space available when Rory Parker hurt himself at Jurby so Dunlop was able to take up the spot.
Dunlop used the track time to further acquaint himself with the new R1 Superbike and he did it in style. Not only was he fastest in practice, he took the top step of the podium in Saturday’s Stewart Events Thundersport GP1 1 (M Dunlop 11m 48.095s) in an awesome display of power and speed.
With just under four weeks to the Vauxhall International North West 200, the Ballymoney rider is certainly setting out his stall to the opposition. The North West 200 race week runs from 10th to the 16th May.
Practices will be held on Tuesday 12th and Thursday 14th with racing on Thursday 14th and Saturday 16th in what promises to be one of the most exciting North West 200s in recent years.
