This weekend was no different and they were back in the medals again, bringing home four medals from the Irish National Youth Championships in County Mayo.

Over 230 of the best young Irish riders battled it out with Ballymoney Cycling Club’s Shay Donley and CAI pupil Rowan Montgomery bringing home three silver and one bronze, adding to the four gold medals their team mate Arthur Taggart won a few days before in the National Track championships.

The Ballymoney riders showed what a tight unit they are as young Shay Donley was involved in a horrific high speed crash. However, his team mates Kevin McCambridge and Arthur Taggart jeopardised their own chances to ensure their team mate was okay, waiting until he got up and resumed the race despite being cut and battered.

Shay went onto win a bronze third place medal with Kevin in sixth and Arthur finishing within the bunch.

Rowan Montgomery was unlucky not to bring home gold, being narrowly beaten by former Irish Champion Odhran Doogan in the crit and the road race. Few could find fault with the talent and commitment shown by Rowan as he took the race to Ireland’s best on the roads and streets of County Mayo.
