ON Saturday the 13th April, 5 members of the Ashcroft Vale Tudo (AVT) fight team went to compete in the ‘Brawl in the Hall’ mixed martial arts fight night staged in the Kilrea GAA club.

After 8 weeks of preparation honing their skills and fitness at both the Ballycastle and Ballymoney clubs of AVT, the fighters had their chance to put the hard work done in the gym into action in the ring.

With 2 wins, a draw and 2 losses the AVT members performed exceptionally well, especially as the 2 losses were by submission when both fighters were probably ahead on the judges’ scorecards and were just keen to get the fight finished before the 3 rounds.

These are the results: Owen Kinney – Win by Decision; Ruairi McCarthy – Win by Decision; Aaron Hamill – Draw by Decision; Aaron Brogan – Loss by Triangle Choke; Alex McCook – Loss by Guillotine Choke.

Alan Ashcroft, head coach of the club, said: “All of our fighters put on standout contests at the event and were able to show an excellent skill set both standing and in the takedown situation. The club and all the coaches are very proud of them all and it was remarked upon to me, how well disciplined the fighters are and how skilled they are becoming.”

It’s exciting times ahead for the club as Ballycastle man Owen Kinney is set to perform on the big stage along with Chris Gaile in the next Cage Contender show to be staged at the end of May. Cage Contender is a great stepping stone to be recognised by other promotions and the club is confident of both Chris and Owen getting the victory on the night.

Mixed martial arts (sometimes known as Cage Fighting) is a multi-discipline sport where competitors are trained in both striking (boxing and kick-boxing) and grappling (judo, jiu-jitsu and wrestling) arts to become fully rounded fighters both standing and on the ground.

At the AVT club, both competitive and leisure training is accommodated and if you want to compete, numerous opportunities are provided in various disciplines both in the cage or ring as well as on the grappling mats.
