Robin McHugh held his Captain’s Day at Ballycastle on Saturday and Andrew McConaghy was the winner with the eight handicapper completing the course in level par to give him a superb total of 44 points.
Andy began Saturday’s round with eight straight pars and rolled in birdies at the twelfth, sixteenth and seventeenth holes on his way to a memorable three shot victory. Second prize on Captains Day went to ten handicapper Jonathan Blair who played his last four holes in one under par to card 41 points.
Chris McCloskey, playing off twenty, had an incredible back nine of 25 points to help elevate him into third place with a total of 39 points. Fourth spot went to sixteen handicapper Jason Brennan on 39 points with the fifth prize going to Tommie Simpson, playing off fourteen, on 38 points. Francis McGinn was the gross prize winner on Saturday with a 72 and Colum Egan finished in second place with a 75. Edgar Dornan picked up the past captains prize on 37 points, John Nicholl was the winner of the veteran’s prize with 39 points and Rita McCormick won the ladies prize with 34 points.
Stephen McAfee won the junior prize with a brilliant score of 43 points which included five birdies and an eagle at the last. Paul Brogan collected the front nine prize with 22 points and David Higgins won the back nine prize with 21 points. The Captain also awarded a nearest the pin and longest drive prizes on holes seventeen and eighteen on Saturday with one of the early starters, George McVeigh, knocking his tee shot into a couple of feet on the par three and Ruairi Bonnar launching a drive close to the 300 yard mark on the par five to win these prizes.
Sunday’s stableford competition was won by Michael Dallat snr ahead of Brendan Black on count-back after both golfers scored 43 points. Eoin Donnelly finished in third place on 42 points and fourth prize went to Colum Egan with a score of 41 points.
Vincent Gallagher was victorious in the Wednesday’s open competition at Ballycastle with a score of 39 points, second prize went to Brian Walsh on 37 points with third prize going to Gerry McGouran for his score of 36 points.
The club’s summer match-play competitions were completed during the week with Michael Dallat jnr winning the Valencia Cup, Liam Gallagher the Tieve Tara Cup and Paul Devlin the Culfeightrin Cup.
Commiserations go to the runners-up in this year’s finals: Mark McPoland, Gerard Dowds and Joe Donnelly.
The Silver Mounted Golf Ball competition has reached the semi-final stages with Shay Paul Duffin and Paul Scott taking on Johnny Blair and Eddie McMullan in the top half of the draw while John Callan and Steven Devlin meet Des Nevin and Nigel Nevin in the other semi-final.
The Shangarry Cup and Plate competitions take place at Ballycastle next Saturday.
The Plate is an 18 hole nett competition while the Cup is a 36 hole gross competition to determine the Club Champion for 2012.
A stableford competition takes place on Sunday 12th August and the following weekend is the re-arranged Duncarbit Cup with round one played on Saturday 18th and round two on Sunday 19th August.
