THE prestigious Doherty Cup for primary schools is back in Ballymoney.
The brilliant boys of the Model strutted their stuff on the big stage of Coleraine Showgrounds on Friday night.

And they looked every bit as good as any of the men who have turned it on at that ground in this season's Irish League.

The Model be
at Millburn Primary School 4-2 in front of a hefty crowd to secure their victory - and their place in the history books for their school.

The Ballymoney team had already won the Mullan Cup this year and started as favourites. With a slight wind in their favour the Ballymoney team encamped themselves in the Millburn half.

Captain of the Model team, Brad Lyons who had scored five goals in the semi-final, tortured the Millburn defence and went close on two occasions with stinging shots.

Luke Mitchell just failed to get his head onto a great cross from Brad for what would have been a great goal. In the heart of the Ballymoney midfield Jamie Knipe and Daniel Brown neutralised any Millburn attempt to attack.

Ten minutes before half time that man Lyons took possession of the ball in the middle of the park and danced past three or four Millburn players before unleashing an unstoppable shot past the diving keeper.

Towards the end of the first half the Millburn team rallied and caused the Ballymoney team some concern. However with Louis McIlveen a safe pair of hands in the Ballymoney goal and Keshav Kher and Joel Gault rock solid in the centre of defence, it seemed Millburn would have to do something special to score.

Connor McIntyre at right back kept any attack down that side at bay. Ballymoney went in at half-time still one nil up but having had most of the play.

Millburn came out to the second half with great enthusiasm and their turn to have the slight wind advantage. Five minutes into this half Millburn drew level with an unstoppable shot high into the Ballymoney net.

This only stirred the Model back into action. Uel McKeegan, Robert Boreland and Warren McCook who came on for the busy Donovan Holmes at half-time, worked tirelessly on the left for the Model and Brad and Luke attacked from the right.

It was only a matter of time before Ballymoney went further in front. This time it was Luke Mitchell who took the ball on the right and as the Millburn defence seemed to melt away in front of him, he drove the ball past the helpless Millburn keeper.

After further relentless pressure from Ballymoney, Luke again pounced onto a great pass and seeing the keeper off his line lifted the ball over his head into the net. The keeper could only watch.

At that stage the match appeared over, but the Millburn team came back with great determination and after a mistake in the centre of the park another unstoppable ball ended up in the Ballymoney net.

That was only the second time this year Ballymoney have conceded two goals in the one match. With only two minutes to go Brad Lyons completed his double with another great goal.
