NOT for the first time this season, the weather gods weren't kind to the teams of the Hutchinsons Tiles Winter League as Saturday had everything.
It was cold, with heavy rain, strong winds, even the sun was reported to have appeared, though it didn't stay for long.
This didn't stop six games from taking place and after the final whistles were blew, Berthas FC, who were victorious over FC Macosquin, found themselves a healthy six points clear due to the inactivity of nearest challengers Riverside Athletic and Hazelbank, and a narrow defeat for Balnamore at home to Mountview.
Somerset also picked up a great three points as they took the scalp of The Taverners who had been in great form.
Highest scorers of the day were Hillview after they banged nine past Coleraine Olympic. West Bann were easy victors over Brook Street while Macosquin Village took the points away from their game with Finn McCools.
Gary Millar leads the chase for the N&N Trophies sponsored Golden Boot after his hat trick for Somerset put him on 20 league goals for the season.
He is closely followed by Hillview's Lee Nevin who hit five on Saturday bringing his tally to 19.
Berthas player Andy Cochrane, Macosquin Villages' Darren Stewart and Colin McFarlane of The Villagers are the best of the rest on 14 goals apiece.

Berthas FC 5 FC Macosquin 0
Berthas home venue at Castlerock is normally windy on a good day but along with the wind came heavy rain, which made for hazardous conditions for both sides.
Decent football was at a premium in the first half with FC Macosquin content on shooting from distance while Berthas tried to play football without much success. Andy Cochrane had a chance to give the home side the lead after he capitalised on a mistake by Moffett but he fired wide.
Chris Chan and Barry Greene both had chances moments later for Berthas but they couldn't convert. At the other end, Mark Mearns' rasping drive stung the fingers of McCrory while McAfee had a powerful effort deflected over.
With moments of the half left, Berthas strung a good passage of play together involving, Gilchrist, Patterson and Brown which put Campbell in on the angle but the big mans strike hit the wrong side of the net. Berthas came out for the second half and started to play the football that had put them top of the league and after a few half chances, Andy Cochrane put them in front when he latched onto Davy Campbell's flick on before coolly slotting the ball past Shaw.
Steven Gilchrist then got number two for the home side when he picked the ball up wide left, looked up to spot the keeper off his line before lobbing him from 30 odd yards out, a good way to open his account for the season. Berthas got their third when Cochrane exchanged passes with Ridgell and Black before his excellent cross was headed home from close range by Adrian Drake for his 5th of the season. The away side had struggled to muster anything decent all game but nearly pulled one back when McGahon beat 2 men but couldn't beat McCrory in the Berthas goal.
Number four for the home side came when Drake returned the favour to Cochrane, crossing for his strike partner to stab home from 6 yards. They completed the scoring moments before the final whistle when McClelland handled Cochrane's cross, Cochrane himself stepping up to send Shaw the wrong way for his second hat trick of the season. Man of the Match: Andy Cochrane (Berthas FC)

Balnamore 1 Mountview 2
This match kicked off in Fulton Park, Balnamore and the weather conditions threatened to make it hard for both teams to play good football.
Fortunately this was not the case as both teams knuckled down and adjusted to the wet and windy conditions early on, playing some good football from back to front.
With Balnamore having no match last week and Mountview having a disappointing defeat, both teams knew that a win was the only result to keep their challenge for the top of the table. Mountview kicked off the match playing against the wind, and it was Balnamore who had the first real chance, when Armstrong's powerful shot from 16 yards was superbly turned around the post by McLaughlin in the Mountview goal. Most of the first half was played in midfield with both teams stringing passes together, but it was Mountview who made the most of turning this possession into attacking play, when they took the lead on the half hour, McVicker's free kick from just inside the opposition half, was met by the head of Caldwell who out jumped his marker and flicked the ball over the advancing Newton in the Balnamore goal.
Five minutes later Caldwell had an easier chance to double the scoring when Ried beat his man to the by-line and crossed the ball across goal, but Caldwell didn't get enough on his header and the ball went agonisingly wide.
The half finished 1 nil. Mountview knew 1 goal wouldn't be enough to beat Balnamore in these conditions and kept pushing forward in the second half. This tactic was rewarded when Cooke made it two nil on the hour mark when he nearly burst the net with a header from Smyth's deep corner. Balnamore now threw caution to the wind and made 3 attacking substitutions.
These tactics brought their rewards with 20 minutes to go. A quick free kick, which had a suspicion of offside, was received by Corr on the right hand side, he flashed the ball across the Mountview goal where Mooney was on hand to turn the ball in at the back post.
This gave Balnamore a hope of getting something out of the game and they continued to push forward, but Mountview's defence held firm and protected their goal well. Mountview held on to win the match with every player doing their bit to win the ball for an all round good team effort. Man of the Match: Jimmy Smyth (Mountview)

The Taverners 3 Somerset 5
The home side had the advantage of windy conditions but it was Somerset who shaded the first exchanges of the game.
Both teams were shell shocked after 15 minutes when they were reduced to 10 men. John Joe Small reacted to a strong Ryan McLaughlin tackle with referee Barr having no option but to send the pair off.
The Taverners reacted to this the best and took the lead moments later when Graur beat 2 men before squaring to Robinson who made no mistake in converting.
Somerset then drew level when Knight picked the ball up out wide, beat 3 men before smashing the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the area. Davy John McBride, who had earlier hit the bar from distance, put his team back in front, his shot from over 30 yards out, wind assisted, flew past the Somerset keeper.
The Taverners then went further in front minutes into the second half when Graur picked the ball up on the edge of the area, turned his man before cracking a belter into the back of the net. If the home side thought it was game over at this stage, they proved to be way off the mark. Gary Millar got his first of the game, and a bang to the head when he rose above Dallas to head the ball into an empty net. He then drew his team level when he met Scott Fraser's cross with a spectacular scissors kick.
The away side now looked the most likely team to score and after a sustained period of pressure, took the lead when Millar played in Loughery and he showed good composure to put the ball past the advancing Dallas and into the net. The Taverners pushed men forward looking for an equaliser but this left them short at the back and this proved costly as Millar got his hattrick and his teams 5th. McGerty made a great challenge in his own half to find Millar who bore down on goal, beat the last defender and shot past Dallas to take his tally to 20 goals for the season. Somerset seen the game out to pick up a great 3 points and keep their title challenge alive. Man of the Match: Gary Millar (Somerset)

Hillview 9 Coleraine Olympic 2
Weather conditions were always going to play a big part in this game. Olympic won the toss and chose to play with the strong wind in the first half, but this played into Hillview's hands.
They dominated position, using the wind to hold up the ball. However, they were becoming increasing frustrated as they were being continually denied by marginal off sides.
Eventually Hillview's hard work paid off. A corner from they left was saved, then rebounded off the post and finally dropped to Black to place it in the bottom corner. Black was to become the provider soon after. He beat the off side and slid the ball to Nevin, who only had to re-direct the ball into the open goal. Nevin doubled his tally from the penalty spot after Hutchinson was brought down by a clumsy challenge. A slip in the Hillview defence provided Olympic with a glimmer of hope. McVey played a short ball to Dunlop and Vauls nicked into steal the ball and slide it past the out of position keeper.
On the stroke of half time both teams were reduced to 10 men. Close reacted to an elbow from Bell and both players were shown red. Nevin completed his hat trick just after half time. A well placed pass by Mullan and the striker found the net off Olympic's right hand post. The game was taken out of Olympics hands as Nevin picked up his fourth and fifth goals in quick succession. McGowan made it seven for Hillview when his quick feet confused the Olympic keeper.
As Hillview committed men forward in search of further goals, Morrow converted after finding himself one-on-one with McVey to make the score 7-2. McClements extended Hillview's lead again shortly afterwards, unleashing a powerful 30 yard wonder strike into the top corner. It was Hillview who completed the score in the 86th minute as Sweeney fired his shot into the roof of the net from a poorly cleared corner. Man of the Match: Lee Nevin (Hillview)

West Bann Athletic 5 Brook Street 2
Blustery wind and rain had a say in the way both teams went about their business at a cold and wet Rugby Avenue. Brook Street won the toss and decided to take advantage of the weather playing with the wind at their backs.
Athletic played some neat football in the opening stages and deservedly took the lead in the 7th minute through Olphert whose shot from 20 yards flew into the net beating the stranded Brook St keeper.
Brook St could have equalised within five minutes when they were awarded a penalty shortly after, however, Athletic keeper James Tosh, facing penalty number 14 of the season, denied Brook St pulling off a fine save. Athletic were awarded a penalty in the 36th minute, which was saved by Mc Kissock however Karl Doherty was quickest to the rebound and made no mistake to make it 2-0 Athletic at the break.
Athletic came out in the 2nd half like a team that felt the job was done, however, Brook St having lifted themselves playing some good football in the opening stages of the half.
Athletic finally got going after a few scares and near misses and scored in the 53rd minute with what was there first attack in the 2nd half to make it 3-0 when Archibald's shot from 12 yards found the bottom corner of the net. However, Brook St got themselves back into the game within a minute when they were awarded another penalty, Biggart's well struck spot kick found the net via the crossbar to make it 3-1.
Brook St sensed a comeback but any thought of this was snuffed out when Athletic found themselves somewhat fortunately 4-1 ahead when the unlucky Ryan Duffy found the back of his own net in the 65th minute when he acrobatically turned in a great cross from McCorriston.
Athletic made four substitutions feeling that the game was over as a contest, though Brook St made it 4-2 when Biggart took advantage of some slack defending on the edge of the Athletic box, finishing well to score his and Brook St's 2nd of the day on 72 minutes.
Athletic only took this as a wake up call and could and should have scored a few more goals but for a mixture of good goalkeeping and poor shooting. Man of the match Martin Pancott made the final stages of the game more comfortable for the home team, continuing his fine goal scoring form of late into the bargain, when he finished well in the 80th minute to make it 5-2 Athletic at the end. Man of the Match: Martin Pancott (West Bann Athletic)

Macosquin Village 2 Finn McCools 1
These two teams fought out a 3-3 draw only weeks ago, so both teams were out for a win this time.
It was all Macosquin Village from the start and they deservedly took the lead when Chris Holmes scored after a '1-2' with Gavin Johnston. MV pushed for more and should have been comfortably in charge but they didn't covert and Finns punished them when Walker converted after a mix-up in the MV defence.
The second half was similar to the first with the home side having all the play while Finns looked content with a draw. It looked like MV were going to miss out on the full 3 points as a mixture of good goalkeeping, good defending and the woodwork kept them out. However with 10 minutes left Darren Stewart got his team the winning goal when he ran onto Lavertys pass before sliding the ball past the advancing Finns keeper. Man of the Match: Gavin Johnston (Macosquin Village)
