WELL, that was worth missing Big Brother for!
Karla Quinn was decorated with the British title following a remarkable display in Sheffield last week.
Having turned down the opportunity to appear on TV to compete in the event, the Rasharkin teenager can put her feet up and watch the show content
in the knowledge that she is the best junior skater in the British Isles.
It was a very happy New Year for Karla who put in an excellent performance in both the short and long programmes.
Following a magnificent short, where she made the British Senior Qualification score - the only Junior in the field to do this - to be leading the field by over 4 points, with another great programme in the long, Karla Quinn became Northern Ireland's first female junior champion for over eight years, the last being Vicki Hutchinson.
Karin Rowlands of AKR Promotions, her PR Consultants, commented: "This is truly an amazing feat for Karla and totally unprecendented.
"Her performances have been getting more and more consistent this year culminating in her qualification for British Senior Championships in Deeside in November.
"However, as Karla is still a Junior she decided to skate in the Junior Championships, having had an unparalled record of two silvers and a bronze in the Juniors in the past it is truly fitting that she has been crowned as British Junior Champion 2008.
"Karla has now taken three British titles in her career - British Novice 2001 and British Primary Champion 2003 in fact she has never been off the rostrum in a British Championships since the age of 10! This is great for Northern Ireland, she will now move up to Seniors next season."
The Ballymoney Times has been following closely the career of Karla Quinn for many years.
Now Karla has made ice skating history by becoming the first ever NI female skater to take three British titles at Novice, Primary and Junior levels.
Karin added: "This is so deserved by Karla, she has really put in the miles on and off the ice, and to take this prestigious title is amazing.
"In the 20-year history of the sport in Northern Ireland Karla has become only the third skater to take this title and the first ever female skater to take the Novice, Primary and Junior British Titles!
"It is over eight years since the last recipient brought the title home, however Karla's steely determination has seen her against all the odds bring the title home again!"
