The North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB) recently commissioned well known Northern Irish artist James McKendry to depict the Causeway School in oils.
James is the grandson of Daniel McConaghy, the first and most well known headmaster of the Causeway School. Eleanor Killough, Executive Officer with the North Eastern Board, therefore thought he would be the perfect artist for the job.
Eleanor commented: "We are absolutely delighted with the painting. It shows off James's talent to its full potential and his fondness for the building, coupled with his love and respect for his grandfather, are clearly evident in the finished piece".
Born near Bushmills in 1935, James McKendry enjoys a considerable reputation as an artist. His work has been widely exhibited and be be found in both private and corporate collections in Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and the USA.
Now settled back in Bushmills, James specialises in painting Antrim's rugged coastline, rural scenes and animals.
Plans are afoot to showcase the painting of the Causeway School plus other works of art in an exhibition held at the School in the near future. A signing event with James McKendry is also in the pipeline. In the meantime, signed prints of the painting are available to purchase from the School itself or from Bushmills Crafts on Bushmills Main Street. Framed canvas prints are also available on request.
The Causeway School, designed by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis, will be open to visitors throughout July, August and September.
Eleanor Killough is always keen to hear from any members of the local community who have links with the Causeway School or indeed any local community groups who wish to visit the School or use it for events or exhibitions.
