When well-known Ballymoney couple, Dick and Joy Barkley, planned their 60th wedding anniversary celebration the decision was made to forgo gifts and, instead, accept monetary donations.

The purpose was to give the amount raised to the Macmillan Cancer unit at Antrim Area hospital in recognition of the care and attention received by one of the Barkley family – the late John Adams from Armoy.

John, the father in law of Tara Adams – Dick’s daughter – had received treatment in Antrim and all the Barkley family decided it would be a nice gesture to raise funding for the Macmillan Unit.

The anniversary took place at The Hedges restaurant and £600 was raised which was handed over last Wednesday to two of the Causeway Fundraising Group representatives, John Dunlop and Anna White at the Barkley home at Dunaghy.

The Barkley family were delighted with the outcome as were John and Anna who said they would ensure the money went straight to the Antrim hospital.

Tara revealed that a further fund-raising event – a table quiz and music - for Macmillan would take place at the Rooks Nest in Armoy on Saturday April 5.

“We are hoping for a good turn out,” Tara said.
