BALLYMONEY'S '˜EYESORE' SOLD

The area had attracted negative attention in recent times due to derelict buildings and vacant premises but now North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has welcomed news that the site has been sold.

Mr Storey told The Times: “Linenhall Street unfortunately has become synonymous with dereliction and has been an eyesore in Ballymoney for far too long.

“It is to be welcomed that the site has been sold.

“Since becoming an elected representative this site and its development have been a constant issue of concern.

“Despite much other work being carried out in the town centre, whether rebuild, renovation or most recently the revitalisation project which saw some £300,000 being spent on Main Street, the question was always asked “What about Linenhall Street?”.

“I look forward to hearing from the new owner about their the time frame and plans for the site. With further work being carried out on plans for High Street and the town’s Masterplan, I trust that all this work can be dove-tailed so that it spells a new beginning for Ballymoney and Linenhall Street. I met on Friday with representatives of Ballymoney Chamber of Commerce and Causeway Coast and Glens Council to work across a number of issues of importance to the town of Ballymoney.

“It was our collective view that the sale of the site was good news and we look forward to hearing the plans.”

President of Ballymoney Chamber of Commerce, Winnifred Mellett said the sale was “a good news story for Ballymoney”.

She added: “It would be a great addition to the town if it was redeveloped as that part of Ballymoney had become an unwelcome sight for visitors and the local community.”

The site itself was described by commercial property consultants TDK as being “1.4 acres in total and has frontages onto Linenhall Street, High Street and Charles Street. The site consists of historic properties and would be ideal for residential or commercial development...can be divided into lots.”
