Understanding Islam event in Coleraine

Coleraine Churches are inviting people to a unique inter-faith event on Saturday, April 1, where they are '˜Seeking to understand Islam as a Christian'.

The seminar will be opened by the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Mayor Alderman, Maura Hickey and is presented by Dr. Chris Hewer, who is a Christian theologian and also an expert on Islamic Studies and Christian–Muslim relations.

The day offers an opportunity to understand our Muslim neighbours and to dispel the myths that are often voiced, and only raise fears. This is an opportunity to build bridges in a multi-faith community. The presentations and discussions will equip those who attend with tools that help build deeper relationships based on tolerance, respect and dignity.

Dr. Hewer said: “My name identifies me as a Christian. I am a Christian who has spent thirty years studying and helping others to understand Islam.’ He says that his approach to the day is “as a person of faith speaking about other people of faith, not as a sociologist trying to build a better society.”

The organisers welcome people from all faiths, or of no faith. The atmosphere will be both friendly and informative. The Programme for the day is as follows:

9:15 am: Confirm Registration and light refreshments.

10:00 am: Official Opening and then presentations by Dr. Chris Hewer

Part 1. The Big Picture – understanding the basics of Islam

Part 2. How do Christianity and Islam relate?

12:30 pm: Lunch break

2:00 pm to 4.00pm: Dr. Chris Hewer

Part 3. Developing a spiritual relation with God and building a just society
