Warning on fake power tools
THE PSNI's Organised Crime Branch is warning the public about potentially lethal fake power tools being sold by crime gangs..
Recently, detectives discovered a number of fake chainsaws which were being circulated for sale by criminals operating in Northern Ireland..
Detective Constable Colin Cushley, from Organised Crime Branch, said these items are dangerous:
“Everyone knows that genuine chainsaws can be dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced, even though they pass rigorous international safety standard tests before being made available to the public. However fake chainsaws are even more dangerous, because they are not tested for customer safety.
“These items are very poor standard copies. We understand they have been made in Asia, not under license, and certainly not by the manufacturer whose name is on the chainsaw. The materials used to put them together are sub-standard and there is potential for one of these chainsaws to disintegrate while they are being used, causing serious injury,"
D/C Cushley urged the public to think twice before buying such an item:
“Some of these chainsaws have been bought by unsuspecting members of the public and we would strongly urge people not to use them. A genuine item can cost as much as 1,000. If anyone is offered something like this by a door to door salesman, or by someone offering a similar item for a vastly reduced price, please don’t take the risk. It's simply not worth it. If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
"Call police immediately on 0845 600 8000. You can also pass information anonymously to the Crimestoppers Charity on 0800 555 111," he said.
