Two more titles for Scorpion boxers
THE big-hitting Scorpion Boxing Club in Ballymoney has landed more glory.
In the County Antrim Intermediate Championships, Scorpion claimed two more titles at the Dockers Club in Belfast.
These Championships are open to anyone from 17 - 35 with any experience and with Antrim boxing on a high after the success at the Olympics the standard of boxing was outstanding.
Paul Donnelly (23) from Ballycastle, making a comeback after seven years, showed his class in beating Conal Hall from Holy Trinity Belfast 10 - 4 in the semi with a great display of counter punching.
This set up the Final with Thomas Waites also from Holy Trinity, Paul, a former Juvenile Champion, proved too strong for his opponent keeping him on the back foot the whole fight and using his silky southpaw boxing to win 8 - 3 and claim the 67kilo title.
Next up was Karol Dlugosz (17) - featured recently in the Times for his success - and in a straight final he faced the much fancied Micheal Cummings from Holy Trinity.
Cummings who is 6’2” started fast with strong body attacks but Karol weathered the storm and started unloading attacks of his own and using his jab to good effect.
As the fight entered the last round Karol, who lives in Ballymoney, had figured Cummings out and claimed a dominant 31 - 8 victory and win the 85kilo Championship, his third title in four weeks.
Seamus McAllister, (17) of Aghadowey, boxing at 57kilo, lost in his quarter final against the experienced Patrick Faloon, Camlough, but gave a very good account of himself losing in the end 15 - 7 but gaining vital experience
Scorpion coach Alan ‘Spike’ Martin told the Times: “So far this has been a tremendous start to our season with four titles in a month and with this being Scorpion ABC 30th Anniversary Year I am delighted how things are progressing. We plan to run a few tournaments in the town this season with a big Anniversary Show planned for Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre early next year.”
