TUV councillor opposed Marian Price motion

TUV councillor Sharon McKillop asked for it to be officially recorded in reports of Moyle Council’s meetings that she was opposed to a motion which was raised in the Ballycastle council chamber regarding the imprisonment of Republican Marian Price, it has emerged.

A majority of councillors recently backed a proposal from Independent councillor Seamus Blaney, seconded by Independent Padraig McShane, “that this Council calls for the immediate release of Marian Price who is now held for almost one year in isolation and that this Council further calls on the Secretary of State Owen Patterson to rescind his order for her detention due to the deterioration in her health. David Ford as justice minister has a responsibility in this case to ensure her civic and human rights are upheld and he should act now’.

Minutes of the meeting now reveal that Councillor Sharon McKillop requested that it be recorded that she opposed the motion, as it was her opinion that this was a matter for the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The minutes added: ‘Councillor S McKillop also requested that it be recorded that she had never put any political items on a Council agenda.’

The minutes further reveal that Ulster Unionist councillor Joan Baird requested a recorded vote be taken on the motion.

On a recorded vote being taken, Councillors Blaney, Donal Cunningham (SDLP), Noreen McAllister, Margaret Anne McKillop, Cara McShane, Colum Thompson (all Sinn Fein), Padraig McShane (Independent) voted in favour and Councillors Joan Baird, Willie Graham, Sandra Hunter (all Ulster Unionist), Robert McIlroy (DUP) and Sharon McKillop voted against the proposal which was carried 7-5.
